What Would You Name This New Kia?
Remember the Kia GT concept?
It was a stunner of a car that signaled Kia’s entrance into the performance realm, along with a fresh design that placed Kia firmly in the good graces of mainstream car guys. Sleek looks on a 390-hp RWD sports coupe will tend to do that!
The thing is, after revealing such a cool concept, Kia’s next car should probably adhere, at least a little bit, to the expectations and design themes the concept presented. Coming out with a gelatinous blob won’t go far with car fans.
Yet, when I opened my Facebook page yesterday, a Kia-shaped blob is what stared back at me. A blob in need of a name.
The car you see on top of this story is the manifestation of the Kia KH concept, meant to sit a rung above the other steeds in the Kia stable and complement its sister car, the Hyundai Genesis.
Kia cars, of late, have hit the right buttons with me. The new Optima is quite the looker, and I dig the tab-style grille the company currently uses. And did I mention the GT?
Frankly, I don’t like this KH concept one bit and am mighty shocked that Kia dropped the ball so badly here. The GT concept was beautiful and had more great styling elements in its front fenders than this one has in all its sheetmetal. This is the first abomination from the Koreans in a long time. The squashed grille looks like something off a cheap Chinese-designed car. Replace it with BMW’s kidney grille, though, and this could pass as a 5 Series. Until the rear, anyway, where a Lexus influence takes over.
This car is supposed to be all stately and elegant, but instead it reeks of a pending Kia inferiority complex. I know its 5.0-liter V8 will make up in performance for what it lacks in looks, but come on, Kia, you’re better than this!
With my opinion out of the way, what do you think? Kia is looking for names for the production-bound KH, which its Facebook fans are tossing around right now. Names like Oppulus, Exodus, Pulse and Venturi have been kicked around. My personal favorite stays true to this car’s obvious inspiration: the Kia 745i.
Do you like Kia’s new KH concept? What would you name it?
