Cars Coming Soon: C7 Corvette Better Not Look Like This

August 23rd, 2012

C7 Corvette?

The next-generation Corvette could debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. There’s no official word on if that’ll be the case or what it’ll even look like, but there’s so much speculation and excitement about the car that it’s already impossible to ignore.

Considering GM’s poor track record of keeping cars coming soon a secret, it’s pretty remarkable that the C7 Corvette still remains an object of speculation. There have been heavily disguised spy shots, but nothing concrete revealing the car’s final design or specs.

In an effort to keep its super-secret C7 from leaking before the big reveal, GM will even suspend tours next month of the plant that builds the Corvette. After September 14, according to a report in The Detroit News, the factory will close to retool for production of the next-generation car. So much for a curious member of the public spilling the beans with an iPhone.

So, until GM finally pulls the sheet off the new ‘Vette, we’re left with unofficial renderings and speculation about what’s to come. I really hope the latest guess proves significantly off-base.

According to Motor Trend, a company called Trinity Animation has combined all the publicly available knowledge, photos and renderings of the upcoming C7 and created images of what it might look like.

MT says,

Among some of the noteworthy details show [sic] in the video are rectangular taillights similar to those on the Camaro, center-mounted quad tailpipe tips, LED accent lighting in the headlamps, and aggressive front fender vents. Another cool feature, if it makes it to production, are the LED lights on the outer rear edge of the rear wheel wells. Also, rather than the domed glass hatch on the current C6 Corvette, this rendering of the C7 shows side rear-quarter windows, and a flat glass rear hatch.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not impressed. Remember the 2009 rumor of a split window and the 2010 rumor of a possible midengine Corvette? The “Transformers” Stingray concept sure looked good and would’ve been a welcome change. Instead we may get a car with a squashed Camaro rear end.

C7 Corvette, rear?

If the Trinity renderings are accurate, at least they’ll prepare me, and probably masses of other hopefuls, for the disappointment of GM playing it safe with the Corvette. The C7 was a chance to toss convention out the window and reinvent the car.

Then again, maybe GM has some surprises up its sleeve and will blow us away with the new Corvette’s debut. All we can do is wait…and continue to speculate.

Would you be happy with the C7 Corvette pictured here?

In many ways, the “new” GM is more old GM than the old GM. (did you get that?) A steady parade of safe, dull, cookie cutter cars, easy to engineer and market. At least the new Corvette won’t be yet another rendition of the Chevy Malibu (like all the other chevys) but if it’s what you show……..damn. DAMN. No wonder GM is hurrying down the list of total sales. It’s a real indictment when bland companies like Toyota and VW push you into third place. With some corvettes pushing the $100,000 range, it’s absurd to get yet another front engine rear drive pushrod v8 vette land yacht that weighs as much as a small SUV and performance achieved mainly on huge sticky tires and brute force. Yes, we can dream of a 2400 pound mid-engine twin turbo v6, but it sure isn’t going to be coming from GM.

Makes the C6 look pretty good…

    @ Jim Redd
I always thought the C6 was a pretty good looking car anyway. I wasn’t really a fan of ‘Vettes until the last model, the ZR1 certainly made me pay more attention. Hopefully Chevy will ditch this concept nonsense and give us a refreshed classic look.
