Ford F-250 Reaches the Top… of Most Stolen List
Ford can add another claim to its long list of popularity-contest wins:
The Ford F-250 is number one!
Sure, this time it’s among car thieves, but any number-one rating is positive, right? It just means the F-250 is so popular and so good, even people who can’t afford one want one.
The big Ford isn’t the only popular truck targeted by thieves. In fact, 8 of the top 10 spots went to trucks or SUVs built by General Motors, so I guess a big congrats goes out to them, too!
I just wonder whatever happened to the good ol’ days of cars like the Accord topping lists of most stolen vehicles, back when thieves were more practical and concerned with things like stealth and, surely, fuel economy.
For almost ten years, the Cadillac Escalade topped the annual list compiled by the Highway Loss Data Institute. As sales of new Escalades slow down, it seems the demand for hot ones has decreased, too.
The top ten stolen vehicles, between the years 2010 and 2012, were:
- Ford F-250 crew cab
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab
- Chevrolet Avalanche 1500
- GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab
- Ford F-350
- Cadillac Escalade
- Chevrolet Suburban 1500
- GMC Sierra 1500 extended cab
- GMC Yukon
- Chevrolet Tahoe
Holy smokes, car thieves, where’s the discretion? You can’t exactly start up any of these and quietly slink into the night undetected! Though I suppose it’s the owners of the vehicles who should try a little harder to prevent theft. Park inside a garage, install an alarm system, do whatever must be done to make sure no one else can get in and drive that rig.
The F-250, according to the HLDI, had a claim frequency of 7 vehicles stolen for every 1,000 insured. That’s almost 6 times the average for all vehicles sold in the United States.
If you have one of these trucks, the threat of having to settle for an insurance claim on it might be another reason to consider selling. If you do sell, do the classy thing and consider throwing in a Club, as an added bonus to the buyer.
Have you ever had a vehicle stolen? What kind of car/truck, and where was it stolen?
