Sorry Civic, There’s a New Compact in Town

November 7th, 2011

2012 Honda Civic

How long has it been since the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic haven’t occupied the top two spots on the list of best selling compact cars in the United States?

I don’t know for sure. But I’ve been alive for 34 years, and I can’t remember a small car seriously challenging either iconic nameplate. The Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Sentra, Volkswagen Jetta and a few others have sold reasonably well, but never enough to knock the Civic and Corolla off the top of the mountain.

Certainly no American car has ever come close. But that was before a series of unfortunate events for one company contributed to the sudden rise of what could be a new American king of the mountain.

Honda’s Troubles Multiply with Thailand Floods

October 31st, 2011

Flooded Hondas

Maybe you’ve been watching the photos coming out of Thailand. This one is of Honda’s underwater assembly plant near Bangkok, which is likely to be out of commission for up to 6 months, affecting 3 percent of global output.

And who can forget the pictures from the earthquake/tsunami disaster in March that humbled Honda big-time? Consumer Reports No Longer Recommends Honda Civic

August 2nd, 2011

2012 Honda Civic

Ever think you’d see that headline? That’s one I’d place right up there with, “U.S. Nearly Defaults” and “Obama Wins Re-Election.”

But these are crazy times we live in, and you just never know what’s going to dominate the headlines.

The Honda Civic has been one of Consumer Reports’ darlings since, oh, I don’t know, the Jefferson administration. It’s a car that has gotten progressively better since its inception in 1972.

Until now.

For its latest test, CR drove the $19,405 2012 Honda Civic LX. For comparison, the 2011 version of the car scored a 78 on the magazine’s scale, which meant a rating of “Very Good.” The 2012 version dropped a shocking 17 points to a mediocre 61. That’s lower than the Kia Forte and Ford Focus. In fact, it’s lower than everything except the redesigned Volkswagen Jetta.

So what happened?
