Excessive Bentley Bentayga Makes Other Cars Look Good

Not that you would... but you could

Not that you would… but you could

You know you’re among a different class of buyer when the vehicles on your shopping list cost more than most homes in the United States.

The new Bentley Bentayga is the luxury brand’s first venture into the SUV market. It’s brutish and sleek, powerful and graceful. With a starting price of about $229,000, it’s also wildly expensive and can quickly eclipse the $300,000 mark with the right options ticked.

Buyers will get the world’s fastest production SUV thanks to a twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 that makes a mighty 600-hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. Top speed is estimated at about 185 miles per hour.

We know this vehicle is far from what most people can afford, so why do we bring it up?

Bentley, Lamborghini and Bugatti Postponing Automotive Extravagance

Usually, reports of a delayed new Lamborghini would be met with jeers and disappointment. One model, though, could see a delay that will please the passionate Lambo fan-base, if not the overly rich status-happy jet set.

The release of the Urus, Lamborghini’s SUV concept based on the Porsche Cayenne, could be pushed back thanks to the dismal state of the European auto industry.

And if the Urus goes, another controversial SUV goes with it. But at least the super-rich will finally get their 4-door Bugatti, right?

Not so fast.

One would think that by the time a car debuted at the king of all auto shows, it would be a work of art. There’s just no excuse for putting a half-thought-out vehicle on the world stage at the Geneva Motor Show.

I might cut some slack to low-volume unknown automakers showcasing their wares, but automakers that set the tone for world-class luxury and performance have no excuse for mediocrity. Yet Bentley, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz all showed up with vehicles straight out of the ugly bucket, while Ferrari, Jaguar and Lamborghini re-wrote the book on beauty.

Keep reading for pictures of each!

Cars Coming Soon: a Bentley Hybrid SUV, Hyundai i-oniq Concept Coupe

A Bentley hybrid SUV?

Bentley currently offers two models to anyone wealthy enough to afford to keep the gas tank full. The Mulsanne, which carries an EPA rating of 11 miles per gallon in the city, and the Continental, which gets an even lower rating of 8.

So when Bentley teases a hybrid, you’ll excuse me for some obnoxious snorting laughter. What would it hope to achieve, 13 mpg?

A hybrid Bentley makes about as much sense as ordering a Diet Coke along with your deep-fried McRib sandwich. You’re not saving any calories.

It gets even weirder when said hybrid Bentley is an SUV.
