Some Used EVs Offer Better Deals Than Their Gas Counterparts

October 8th, 2015

Used electric cars continue to drop in value. Willing to cut the fuel hose out of your life? It might prove less expensive to buy a used electric vehicle than its gas-powered counterpart.

The CarGurus CarValues page helped me do some research on the Instant Market Value of used electric vehicles and their gas-powered counterparts. It’s a helpful tool that helps you see the true cost of what used cars are selling for in your area in real time. (Your results may vary from mine based on geography and other fluctuations, because Instant Market Value can change as more cars get listed for sale.)

Fiat 500e

Fiat 500e used car photoLet’s look at the Fiat 500e as an example. A 2014 model has an Instant Market Value of $13,445 for a used version with 24,000 miles on it. In this instance, a 2014 Fiat 500 in the Pop trim level will be less expensive at $11,929.

However, as the EPA’s fuel economy site points out, it will cost you $7,000 in average in fuel costs to drive the gas-powered Fiat for 5 years. The 500e has a 5-year energy cost of $2,500. It will take you only about 18 months to make up the difference. That’s probably worth it depending on how long you plan to keep the car.

Get a Truck and Be a Hero!

March 9th, 2015

Chevy Silverado

“Remember, we’re taking the greenhouse,” my wife said.

My heart fell to my knees. It was bad enough that we had to take the 10 years of stuff that had accumulated in the garage. I didn’t even want to take the living-room furniture.

Moving a couch is hard. Moving a greenhouse must be impossible.

We started our move two weekends ago, which is when the first mention of moving the greenhouse occurred. I’ve been putting it off, because people are meant to move to and from houses, not to move actual houses. And the greenhouse is, let’s not mince words, a house.

It’s a monstrosity that borders on being a permanent structure. Imagine a regular house, replace the walls with plexiglass, and you have a pretty good idea of the task that loomed before me.

The solution involved my brother-in-law, a friend of his, and two capable pickup trucks that made the task almost, somewhat, enjoyable.

No More Chevy in Europe – Would You Miss It Here?

December 9th, 2013

2007 Chevrolet Kalos

There’s probably not a lot of mourning happening right now across Europe after Chevrolet announced the demise of the brand there.

How do I know this?

It’s an assumption, of course, but one based on experience.

I was in Europe back in 2009 and drove a Chevy Kalos for 10 days through monsoon rains and puddles that were only slightly smaller than the Atlantic Ocean.

Had I been in an American Chevy, like maybe a Silverado or even a Malibu, the puddles might have looked like nothing more than a small collection of raindrops. The Kalos, though, couldn’t navigate through the waters, and my trip’s itinerary changed dramatically as a result.

Aside from having the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car and shifting through the gears with my left hand, the little Kalos struggled through the hillsides and slowly churned and whirred its way through the winding Irish countryside.

2015 Chevy Colorado Revealed!

November 21st, 2013

2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71

Just last week we caught word of the soon-to-be revealed 2015 Chevy Colorado pickup, and now we have official images and specs of the hotly anticipated new midsize truck.

The new Colorado is built for people who want strength and capability in a truck but don’t want to park a full-size one in the garage.

Also, the truck is a much better choice than a large and lumbering Silverado to take on an epic trek to the deadliest road in the world. Just something to keep in mind, because, well, you never know.

GM’s New Behemoths: Can the Tahoe, Yukon and Suburban Win Buyers?

September 13th, 2013

2015 GMC Yukon Denali

People just don’t buy giant SUVs anymore. The old body-on-frame people-movers have been replaced by car-based crossovers and miniature versions of the big utes that used to rule American roads.

It’s hard to even find full-size truck-based SUVs anymore. One automaker, though, is determined to not let the big land yachts die and has released images and some specs of its next round of unapologetically large vehicles.

Say hello to the brand new 2015 Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

They are so good, you should probably buy a used one instead.

Cars Coming Soon: A Midsize GM Truck to Challenge Tacoma

April 18th, 2013

New Chevrolet Colorado

Sales of the Toyota Tacoma are up this year almost 23 percent over last year. No, that’s not the most significant or exciting statistic ever mentioned in a car blog, but it could be the foundation for an exciting development over at General Motors.

GM got out of the midsize truck business last year after the mediocre GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado failed to light showroom floors on fire. Ford and Chrysler exited the market in 2011, leaving the Tacoma and Nissan Frontier as the two major midsizers in the Unites States.

The Tacoma is the undisputed king of the world in its segment, and challenging it isn’t an easy task. That’s pretty much the common consensus, as most automakers would rather roll over than even try to offer a challenge.

Is There Any Prestige Left in Chevrolet?

March 20th, 2013
2014 Chevrolet Impala

2014 Chevrolet Impala: With the right marketing, it could be huge

Name a Chevrolet car, not called Camaro, that buyers would pay $40,000 for the privilege to take home.

Impala? Nope. Malibu? Nice, but not more-than-$30K nice. So why is it that competitors like Toyota and even Hyundai can sell cars for over 30 grand, or even up to 40, while Chevy is forced to move its metal through the use of heavy discounts?

The answer comes down to one word. You might think that word is “quality,” but you’d be wrong.

The word is “marketing.”

Super Bowl MVP Flacco Gets His Prize: A C7 ‘Vette

February 5th, 2013

Joe Flacco and his 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

My intent was to leave the Super Bowl alone. I’m not much for carrying on hype, but I forgot about one very important part of the game: the Super Bowl MVP’s prize.

As though the elevation to elite status in the league, the Lombardi trophy, the adoration of millions and the guarantee of a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract weren’t enough, MVP Joe Flacco got something else.

A 2014 Corvette Stingray.

Super Bowl’s Over, Let’s Move On

February 4th, 2013

Chevrolet Corvette

Congratulations to the Ravens and Baltimore fans everywhere!

While the game was electrifying, I thought the advertisements overall were severely lacking in energy this year. It’s like the power went out on all of them even before the Superdome went dark. My favorite car ad was the Audi prom spot. The Chrysler/Ram Paul Harvey spot almost made me throw up in my mouth a little bit. The others were just mediocre.

With that out of the way, let’s get back to cars rather than the outlandish, extravagant attempts to sell them. Yes, we need vehicles to serve the mundane and much-needed transportation services of daily life, and I find irony in the fact that we often buy them based on some perceived emotion or extreme experience marketing people promise they will provide.

True car enthusiasts can look past overly produced TV commercials and buy based on other, more meaningful, factors.

One of those factors might be the car’s future collector value. Make it affordable and fun to drive as well, and the deal closes itself! What 2013 cars could be future collectibles?

More Leaked Info, Drawings of C7 Corvette

December 26th, 2012

C7 Corvette drawing, rear

When you’re looking forward to the introduction of a new car model, you scour the web and lap up any new information you can find.

Spy shots provide a glimpse into the future, new official specs or performance numbers from the automaker help wet that whistle, and leaked drawings from owners’ manuals can send expectant fans into a tizzy.

That’s the case with the coming C7 Corvette, a highly anticipated car due for its official debut in just three weeks.
