The Chevy SS May Not Die Just Yet!

We vote with our dollars.

Sometimes car enthusiasts like to dream of cars they’d buy if only certain automakers would make them available.

We all have that friend who has said, “Oh I’d totally buy an 800-hp 3-wheeled nuclear-powered Honda, but they just don’t make it.”

Well, if enough people say they’d buy one, Honda could very well appease its audience and make one. But would it sell? Of course not, because it’s a dumb idea and Honda would be left with a bunch of cars it can’t sell and millions of dollars wasted on development.

Sometimes, though, automakers do comply with our wishes even if doing so is a huge gamble. The Chevy SS is a prime example.

Say Goodbye to the Chevy SS

Get it while you can, because the Chevy SS is going and going fast.

Like the beautiful and amazing GM V8 super sedans before it, the Chevy SS appears to be on the one-way track to discontinued-ville. The previous cars, the Pontiac GTO and Pontiac G8 GXP were ferocious and well-built cars, but didn’t last more than a couple of model years.

Personally, I kick myself, because I had the chance to buy a new GXP just after news of Pontiac’s coming extinction broke. A nearby dealer had one left and contacted me with a heckuva good deal, but I passed. Now, those used GXPs can go for close to 40 grand because there are so few on the market.

There are only 6 in CarGurus’ used listings as of this writing, and 3 them are flagged as overpriced. And they’ll probably sell.

The same thing could happen to the Chevy SS.

2014 Chevy SS: Everything But the Looks

Some might call it a 4-door Camaro. Or the return of the Pontiac G8 GXP. Or the American version of the Australian Holden VF Commodore.

It might be heralded as the return of the American RWD supersedan, while others will write it off as a slip backward to the GM we used to know.

Whatever you think of it, it’s coming: the 2014 Chevrolet SS. It’s fast. It’s powerful. And it looks like a Malibu.
