Say Goodbye to the Chevy SS

November 19th, 2014

2014 Chevrolet SS

Get it while you can, because the Chevy SS is going and going fast.

Like the beautiful and amazing GM V8 super sedans before it, the Chevy SS appears to be on the one-way track to discontinued-ville. The previous cars, the Pontiac GTO and Pontiac G8 GXP were ferocious and well-built cars, but didn’t last more than a couple of model years.

Personally, I kick myself, because I had the chance to buy a new GXP just after news of Pontiac’s coming extinction broke. A nearby dealer had one left and contacted me with a heckuva good deal, but I passed. Now, those used GXPs can go for close to 40 grand because there are so few on the market.

There are only 6 in CarGurus’ used listings as of this writing, and 3 them are flagged as overpriced. And they’ll probably sell.

The same thing could happen to the Chevy SS.

Four Great Trucks Americans Can’t Have

Holden Colorado

Coming soon: the new Chevy Colorado

Top Gear made the Toyota Hilux legendary by trying to destroy it. It drove out of an ocean, survived a collapsing building and traversed to the North Pole. The truck simply can’t be stopped.

The Hilux is a perfect example of a tough truck that Americans don’t get to enjoy. Instead, we get the Tacoma and Tundra. Which are fine, but really, what would happen if a new Tacoma got submerged in an incoming ocean tide? I shudder to think.

As great as the Hilux may be, is it still the toughest little truck in all the world? After all, it hasn’t been significantly updated since 2005, and at least three other trucks have matured into worthy competitors.

But can anyone really beat the Toyota?

Cars Coming Soon: 2014 Chevrolet SS

2009 Pontiac G8 GXP: The basis for the new SS

The 2008–2009 Pontiac G8 GXP remains one of my favorite American cars ever built.

Of course, we all know that once General Motors finally hit a home run with the Pontiac brand, it promptly pushed the self-destruct button, and Pontiac exploded into oblivion. Built with some of the best pieces in the GM parts bin, the G8 GXP had the Corvette‘s 6.2-liter, 402-horsepower LS3 V8 under the hood and none of the plastic body cladding glued on to nearly all other Pontiacs in modern history.

Not like we need another high-powered V8 vehicle roaring over American roads, but one like the G8 would be most welcome.

Enter the 2014 Chevrolet SS.
