Cars Coming Soon: The Beauty of Ghibli

April 11th, 2013

2014 Maserati Ghibli

Last Fall I was walking through the streets of Seattle with a friend when a parked car caught her eye. She turned her head as we passed the low-slung sports car and said, “What… is that?”

It was a Maserati GranTurismo, arguably one of the most beautiful cars on the planet. We don’t see a lot of exotics in our neck of the woods, so the Trident-branded beauty stood out to us both. There’s just something about a Maserati that demands attention. It’s an understated, elegant exotic that quietly seduces the senses. Well, until the engine turns on. The slow burble of the V8 can turn into a cacophony of roars and pops that’ll leave you wondering what in your life has gone so terribly wrong as to not have one of these in your garage.

By unveiling the new Ghibli sedan, Maserati hopes to drive more of us rectify the problem of not having a Maserati.

Maserati Ghibli Caught Testing, Will Take on 5 Series, E-Class

2013 Maserati Ghibli

If you can’t get to a Maserati, maybe a Maserati will come to you.

Maserati has always been an aspirational brand, sitting perhaps just beneath Ferrari but above BMW in the hierarchy of automotive royalty. To buy a new Maserati currently takes at least a hundred grand, and you’d have only a couple of choices. Buyers can choose the sexy and powerful GranTurismo sports car or the family-friendly supersedan known as the Quattroporte.

Even top-tier automakers, though, struggle to find a niche to generate profit. For many, the answer is dipping down to lower markets in an attempt to lure more buyers. The sales ploy is easy and often very convincing: Own an exotic car for nearly the price of a mass-market premium car.

The Maserati Ghibli may be next to test the theory of automakers going cheaper to make more money.

Cars Coming Soon: BMW 4 Series, Lexus IS Range, New Maserati Plans

December 6th, 2012

BMW 4 Series

BMW 4 Series.

The name has an odd ring to it, doesn’t it? While it might sound funny to say, the new coupe looks absolutely sinister, and I don’t think it’ll be long before the name slips off the tongue like we’ve known it for years. The 4 Series replaces the 3 Series coupe and has a 2-inch-longer wheelbase, adds 1.7 inches of width, and is a half-inch shorter. The resulting look is somewhat like a smaller 6 Series and incredibly sleek compared with the more conservative 3 Series.

Just guessing here, but it’s probably safe to assume power will come from the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4 and the 3.0-liter turbo 6 from the 3 Series sedan. The BMW 4 Series will debut at next month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Also debuting in Detroit will be the new range of the Lexus IS.
