Get ready for the return of the midsize truck!

The Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier have been the only real contenders in the “small” truck market for years now. I use quotes there because the Tacoma has become the size of an older F-150, which in effect has turned it into a full-grown pickup.

I love midsize trucks and am excited that the all-new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon will make their world debut next week at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, according to General Motors.

Used Midsize Pickups Don’t Come Cheap

Want one? Pony up!

Tell someone they can’t have something, and they’ll want it more.

Stop making something, and people will demand it.

Put something in limited supply, and prices will rise. Or, in the used car market, prices will at least fall a little more slowly than usual.

That’s exactly what’s happening with used midsize pickup trucks. Since fewer are made new, there are fewer on the used market, and prices are nearly holding steady. Want a 2010 midsize truck? With prices just 3.7 percent less than the original price, you might be better off snagging a brand-new one! If you can find one, of course.

Four Great Trucks Americans Can’t Have

Coming soon: the new Chevy Colorado

Top Gear made the Toyota Hilux legendary by trying to destroy it. It drove out of an ocean, survived a collapsing building and traversed to the North Pole. The truck simply can’t be stopped.

The Hilux is a perfect example of a tough truck that Americans don’t get to enjoy. Instead, we get the Tacoma and Tundra. Which are fine, but really, what would happen if a new Tacoma got submerged in an incoming ocean tide? I shudder to think.

As great as the Hilux may be, is it still the toughest little truck in all the world? After all, it hasn’t been significantly updated since 2005, and at least three other trucks have matured into worthy competitors.

But can anyone really beat the Toyota?
