If you ever thought a car with 300 horsepower and 30 miles per gallon was impossible, Ford would like to prove you wrong.
The 305-hp 2011 Mustang V6 has been certified by the EPA to deliver 30 miles per gallon on the highway with a manual transmission (31 with the auto) and 19 mpg in the city. Ford says this is the first time anyone has delivered a car with more than 300 hp and better than 30 mpg.
That’s pretty exciting, and is sure to bring driving excitement to many thousands of drivers. The Mustang certainly isn’t the only choice though when looking to maximize fuel economy and speed. Here, we present you with eight others that’ll have you squealing the tires while using less gas.
2010 Chevy Camaro
The V6 Camaro is rated at 29 mpg on the highway and generates 304 horses from its 3.6-liter engine.
2010 MINI Cooper S
Lightning fast acceleration, superb handling and 36 mpg on the highway make this a sure thing for fun. As long you don’t have kids or a big dog.
2010 Mazda3 s
A 2.5-liter inline-4 is good for 167 horses while delivering 21 mpg city (with the manual) and 29 mpg highway.
2009 Porsche Cayman
Overall fuel economy for the base model is 26.4 mpg, plus you get Porsche’s PDK dual-clutch automated manual gearbox and 265 horsepower from a 2.9-liter engine.
2010 Subaru Impreza WRX
A turbocharged 265 hp Boxer engine delivers 25 mpg on the highway while providing exhilarating acceleration. (Subie’s Legacy 2.5GT is a similar option: a 6-speed manual transmission and turbocharged 265-horsepower engine deliver 25 mpg highway.)
2010 Chevy Cobalt SS
A 2.0-liter 260 hp turbocharged I4 engine powers the Cobalt SS from zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds and the quarter mile in 14.2 while achieving 30 mpg on the highway.
2010 Volkswagen GTI
You thought I was going to forget this one, didn’t ya? Yeah right. With 31 mpg on the highway and a turbocharged, intercooled, direct injected 4-cylinder putting down 200 horses, this might be the most fun car of the bunch.
Of course, individual results may vary.
What is your favorite fun car that delivers good gas mileage? Which ones did I miss?
