Cars Coming Soon: Chevy’s Onslaught of 13 New Vehicles for 2013

2014 Chevrolet

Hold on to your bowties, because Chevrolet is about to unleash some insanity.

Well, maybe. Using the words “insanity” and Impala or Malibu in the same sentence might not make much sense, but I think such a descriptor could be used for the new SS or the still-to-be-unveiled C7 Corvette.

While sales for Chevrolet this September are about 5 percent higher than last September, the brand could still use a jolt of excitement. A new Imapala won’t provide enough, but maybe one of the surprises GM recently teased will.

The Detroit Free Press quoted GM spokesman Michael Albano talking about the new models:

13 is a big year for Chevrolet. You know some of them. There’s a lot of chatter about others and a couple will be complete surprises, which we’re thrilled about.

We know Chevy will update the Impala, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD, Corvette, Traverse, Equinox, Tahoe and Suburban in 2013 for the 2014 model year. It will also offer a diesel Cruze and an electric Spark. That leaves room for two surprises, one of which I’m guessing will be the SS. The other?

Your guess is as good as mine.

It would be fun to hope for a 2-seat roadster, but that seems like a laughable idea. Something hybrid or electric might be on the way, considering the performance arena is covered pretty well already by the Camaro, Corvette and, we think, the SS. Maybe the surprise is something along the lines of an inexpensive, RWD coupe to do battle with the Subaru BRZ! It seems like something like that would have been spied already, though.

Chevy pretty much has the gamut of car categories covered, from the miniature Spark and Sonic to the giant Suburban. It doesn’t need to fill a new category (unless, again, the BRZ category is on the table), so it must be thinking of an addition to an existing category. And, it must be something that a GM marketing guy could be “thrilled” about. It takes a lot to thrill marketing people, so maybe Chevy really does have something insane in store for us.

Does Chevrolet have your attention with the announcement of 13 new/revised models for 2013?

  1. No doubt most of them will look like the Malibu, America’s number 1 xerox car. I’ll give you a prediction: With so many new models in one year, 2013 will go down as the worst quality year since the 1970’s for GM. When the crash came, GM dumped scores of their most experienced and talented engineers who were responsible for most of those quality gains over the past ten years. The newbies and foreigners GM hired to replace them have a long way to go, and you’ll see more of those cars bursting into flames and being shipped with no brake pads. Supppliers like Delphi did the same thing, so count on some pretty scary supplier messes, too.
