Jaguar’s comeback story has almost reached its climax.
Not long ago, the leaping cat was nearly written off as a has-been. A relic of old Britain, a victim of stodgy design, a casualty of an American car company whose ownership only pushed the nail in deeper.
Today, though, Jag’s future has never looked brighter, as exciting models fill showrooms and announcements of new models keep filling the pages of car blogs. Today, we report on two cars on opposite sides of the Jaguar spectrum.
Jaguar’s R models, in the words of the great cat itself, “Offer the highest levels of visceral Jaguar performance and design.” The next model to gain the R designation will be the flagship XJ, meaning the newly christened XJR will sit proudly at the top of the Jaguar line. Currently that honor is held by the XJ Supersport.
Details of the car, along with pricing, will be released at next week’s New York Auto Show. Jaguar’s official picture of the XJR shows a sultry beast the company says is “an extraordinary opulent machine with more than expected levels of interior luxury.”
I’m guessing it will also take more than expected levels of cash to own one, but that’ll all get sorted out next week.
Spy shots of the baby Jag are just now beginning to come in, which means the car is probably still 2 years or so away from an official reveal. The engine range could begin with 4-cylinder units, including the 2.2-liter diesel currently used in the XF and a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine. A V6 diesel and a supercharged V6 gas engine could come down the line, though I’d wager that U.S. buyers will have the choice of only the petrol offerings.
Still, these are exciting times to be a Jaguar fan.
