Dire predictions of an entire generation having zero emotion toward cars have fueled predictions of an unprecedented “buyers strike” in America.
That’s probably not going to happen.
A love, and a need, for cars will continue to dominate the landscape, even as younger folks grow into mature, car-buying adults.
I reference the ferocious new Honda Civic Type R as proof.
The $34,775 Civic Type R, the first Type R released for sale in the United States, produces 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from its 2.0-liter turbocharged i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine. This is the Honda that will make young people love Honda again.
Motor Trend says,
A short-throw six-speed manual transmission routes power to the front wheels and comes standard with a helical limited-slip differential. The track-spec Civic rides on black 20×8.5-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in 245/30ZR20 Continental SportContact 6 high-performance tires. Stopping power is provided by four-piston Brembo calipers clamping down on 13.8-inch cross-drilled rotors up front and 12.0-inch rotors with single-piston calipers in the rear.
Honda isn’t the only one that’s reinvigorating young buyers and sending them into dealerships across the country. The Detroit News said that the Honda is:
the latest in a flood of driver-centric enthusiast cars aimed at the heart of the North American market. Other affordable millennial-friendly toys include the Ford Focus RS, VW Golf R and Toyota 86, and off-road rascals like the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and Toyota Tacoma TRD.
I’m not saying that auto sales will perennially top 17 million units, as they did last year, and I acknowledge the building concern over the potentially dangerous sub-prime auto loan market. Automakers are, however, doing their part to keep young buyers interested by building vehicles that mix unrivaled levels of technology and heart-pumping adrenaline for those who want it.
Is the auto market changing? You bet. Will car buyers of tomorrow lose their passion for cars and stop buying vehicles?
Don’t bet on it.
