Lexus Gets Its Sexy On with the LF-LC

Lexus desperately wants out of the stodgy luxury perception that has started to surround its image.

Things started to change with the hugely expensive and ultra-fast LFA supercar, then came some new design elements and sportier performance characteristics. Now, with production of the LFA ended, a new Lexus king is poised to sit atop the throne. It won’t be as expensive, or as fast, but that just means it’ll be more accessible and more will be made.

That, my friends, will be a very good thing.

Two things are guaranteed to sell cars: rarity and design.

When a car is both rare and beautiful, it’ll sell for big bucks no matter what’s under the hood. When an everyday car is beautiful and affordable, hundreds of thousands of people will write checks and proudly show off their gorgeous new rides.

There’s no question that Jaguar currently builds some of the most handsome vehicles on the market. It always has, with the possible exception of the unfortunate-looking S-Type. The one time it ventured into supercar-dom, it hit a home run with the XJ220.

Lexus: The Car Company for Stodgy Old People.

There was a time when that could have been the slogan for the Japanese luxury brand. The popular LS 400 is what the “in” crowd of 60+ year-olds had to be seen driving. The era of comfortable cruising cars continued with the LS 460, and Lexus’ reputation for offering “Toyotas with a spit shine” continued with its ES and GS cars. The RX, GX and LX SUVs were, and are, popular among moms in upper-class suburbia.

What Lexus never stood for before was sexy performance.
