The poor old estate car has come in for a tough time of it in recent years. The problem has nothing to do with the products themselves, which continue to improve with every generation, but with buyers discovering something they deem to be better.
The 2015 New York International Auto Show will come to a close this weekend, and as usual, automakers packed the Javits Center with beautiful new vehicles in hopes of making as big a splash as they could during the crowded hypefest. We attended last week’s 2-day press preview, and we have to say it was a very fun but exhausting trip; the automakers like to keep the press moving around the venue. But we moved quickly and made it to nearly all the press conferences with help from plenty of free coffee and some life-saving free chairs.
Some of the biggest names in the business were there to show off what the next year of production has to offer the market. Automakers all more or less stressed the same common themes throughout the preview, but some of the more unexpected themes included fuel cells, semi-autonomous-driving features, and affordable luxury (with the exception of Land Rover and Jaguar, who touted their models’ steep price tags). Dozens of reveals took place at the press conferences, and we thought we’d share our impressions on some of the biggest.
There’s a lot of anger in car design these days.
Back in my formative years, vehicles just looked like vehicles. Maybe a face could be perceived somewhere between the tungsten halogen headlamps and steel grilles, but generally car “faces” were nothing more than utilitarian methods of shining light and sucking air. I liked that.
Today’s cars are different, mostly because advancements in headlamp technology have allowed designers to get more creative and not only give their cars a face, but create an entire personality.
Typically the personality chosen is an angry one, intended to give the car a sinister look of intimidation.
For the first time in many, many years, Jaguar is on a roll.
The XJ, finally, is a serious executive machine instead of an outdated heritage car. The XK sports car remains one of the most beautiful vehicles in the world, and the XF provides a midlevel luxury sedan on par with the BMW 5 Series.
What Jag’s been missing is a competitor to the Porsche Boxster, which should be remedied in early 2013 with the Jaguar XE.
AutoExpress has some spyshots of what appears to be a test mule hot-weather testing right here in the U.S. (there’s been plenty of opportunity for that, right?). The car will sit on a shortened XK chassis, likely feature a range of V6 powerplants and even boast a performance-heavy “R” version.
Not one to sit idle, Porsche will reportedly fill a gap that’s been missing in its lineup since the glorious 928 faded away in 1995 with, well, a new 928!
