2014 Honda Accord Hybrid: Sophisticated Mediocrity

September 24th, 2013

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid

Nothing illustrates how far hybrid technology has come in the last decade better than the Honda Accord.

Built from 2004-2006, the first Accord Hybrid achieved up to 33 miles per gallon and cost just over $30,000 new. It’s combined EPA rating of 28 mpg was only slightly better than a 4-cylinder gas-only Accord’s, which scored a 24 mpg combined rating and got up to 31 mpg on the highway.

Obviously, the equation didn’t work out, and people shied away from the hybrid. I remember driving one back in 2004 and noticing the split-second pause when the engine transitioned between gas and electric power. Needless to say, it wasn’t an impressive car.

Can the 2014 Accord Hybrid make up for its predecessor’s follies?

Cars Coming Soon: Honda Volt… Err… Accord Plug-In Hybrid

October 4th, 2012

2014 Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle

I’ve waxed ecstatic about a lot of fun, fast and powerful cars lately. I perk up at the sound of a wailing V12 or the low gurgle of a V8. I could listen to the sound of an Aston Martin starting or a Maserati cruising all day long. These cars create a visceral reaction that releases floods of endorphins and just makes me smile.

Electric cars don’t have that effect.

It’s not that I don’t believe in the cause of the EV, I just don’t feel a passion for them. I get their purpose, and I respect it, but at the end of the day, there’s nothing there to grip me.

The Chevy Volt did nothing to change that. The Tesla Model S might, just because it’s so dang sexy. The Honda Accord Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, due for the 2014 model year, has a chance to catch on… if it’s priced right. While it’s by no means passion-inducing, at least it seems to have everything the Volt does, plus a healthy dose of whatever it is Honda has that leads to customer obsession.

Cars Coming Soon: 2013 Honda Accord Looks Better Than Ever

August 9th, 2012

2013 Honda Accord

We’ve spent plenty of time here lauding the design of Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren, Aston Martin and the like. Rarely do we take a moment to applaud the more accessible cars. The cars most of us drive every day aren’t the type to grab attention for their design, at least not in a positive way.

Cars for the masses are typically either understated and bland or so modern that they quickly show their age.

The Honda Accord certainly falls into the bland category, though images of the 2013 version have just been released, and things are looking…well…a little less bland!

Surprise! The Best Selling Vehicles of 2011

January 6th, 2012

2012 Ford Fusion

The number one best selling vehicle last year was the Ford F-150. No big surprise there, right?

Dealers sold a total of 584,917 F-Series trucks in 2011, beating out the second-place Chevrolet Silverado by 169,787 vehicles. If anything proves that the people in the U.S. like their trucks more than their gas money, this is the list that proves it.

While the number one and two spots on the list are not a surprise, things get interesting from there. The Accord/Camry fight has been infiltrated by a third player, and an aging contender, once thought to be washed up, came back with a surprising showing.

Keep reading for the list!
