Life is good when your first car is a Lamborghini.
At least, it appears to be good if you’re the kid enjoying the attention your car generates. Onlookers, on the other hand, will assume the kid behind the wheel is either a spoiled a brat or a rebel secretly taking his dad’s car out for a spin.
Kids everywhere dream of owning a supercar as their first vehicle, but there aren’t too many in the world who actually see it happen. The ones who do are proof that no child, regardless of wealth, should ever get behind the wheel of anything but an Accord.
I sometimes participate on the Q&A website Quora, where this question was posed:
I was thinking of giving my son my used Lamborghini as a first car. Is it a good idea?
It is my used 2006 Murcielago from my collection. I had a Miura as a first car so I’m aware of the performance could be mildly overwhelming as a first car.
Some people just don’t have a clue. “Mildly overwhelming?” This is a car with 572 horsepower from a monster V12 engine. It’ll hit 62 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds, while topping out at 206 mph. This isn’t a mildly overwhelming car, it’s a 4-wheeled casket for a teenager.
Unless the car is used only for special training from a professional on a reserved track, a parent who gives a car like this to a child is clearly irresponsible and unconcerned with the child’s safety.
Plus, kids can tend to get a little unappreciative. Take the story of the young lad who was given a Ferrari 458 Italia by his father, only to set it on fire with the hope that he could get a newer model.
I rest my case.
Any child’s first car, regardless of wealth, should be something safe and sane, like a Honda or perhaps a well-optioned Subaru. Kids and supercars just don’t mix.
What supercar would you have wanted as your first car? (Be happy you didn’t get it!)

I remember the story of Boris Becker, the German tennis star, whose first car was a Porsche 959. Of course he bought it himself, but he’s told some stories of some dangerous high speed adventures with it. Kids and supercars definitely don’t mix.
