10 Cars and Trucks That Should Go Diesel

2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

If you’re like any other car buyer in America, you’ve probably noticed the wider availability of diesel models in recent months. It seems like everybody is starting to get in on the diesel game, with Volkswagen adding more diesel models after the huge success of its Jetta TDI, Porsche introducing a diesel version of the Cayenne and Ram recently announcing a diesel 1500.

Attracted by higher fuel-mileage ratings, greater reliability and longer-lasting engines, consumers are becoming more and more receptive to the engines that were despised just a few short years ago, when diesel was synonymous with noise, pollution and foul odor. Driven by advances in diesel technology, the new engines have largely wiped away consumers’ bad memories and are now finding their ways under the hoods of sports cars, family cars, trucks and SUVs.

While there is already a large selection of diesels that will appear in the 2014 lineup from the likes of Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Mazda, BMW, Chevrolet, Audi, Jeep, Porsche and Ram, there are still many holes in that line-up that we here at CarGurus would like to see filled. In order help fix this, we’ve brought together the 10 cars we’d most like to see offered with a diesel option in the U.S.

Grading the New Generation of Old Friends

2013 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Convertible

Let’s face it, gearheads are very sensitive people when it comes to cars. Whether it’s a preferred maker, type of oil or tire, opinions abound and arguments fly when it comes to the auto industry and its faithful followers. When I hear someone proselytizing a certain oil weight and viscosity, I often ask myself, “Where is this passion coming from?” Have you ever seized an engine with the oil you’re currently portraying to be the asbestos of the auto industry? No, you probably just found a coupon for the synthetic that’s currently in your engine, and because it’s 5W less than what the manual recommends, you’ve now figured out the meaning of life.

Really want to piss off the ornery oil objector? Ask that person about what they think of the new Dodge Dart compared to what it used to be. Watch out, you might start a fire. The auto industry is all about comparisons and fortunately, we as car fans love to weigh in. With so many classics seeing a resurgence in recent years, it’s only fair that we bring this debate into an open forum and watch the sparks fly.

Seven Stylish Summer Convertibles Under $10k

2003 Audi A4 convertible

Well, it’s about that time of year. The time of year when you look up at that puny sunroof adorning your boring sedan and say, “Man, wouldn’t it be nice to have a real convertible?!” Up here in the Northeast, when the temperature rises, the tops drop like clockwork. While many drivers are still using their seat warmers, convertible owners start braving the elements as long as it’s dry and the temperature is north of 45 degrees. For me, seeing someone enjoying their sporty convertible on a chilly spring day sparks a whirlwind of emotions summed up by one word: Jealousy. Because it’s still only spring, I take a semi-sick pleasure in knowing that the happy-go-lucky guy driving his Porsche in front of me is freezing and hope he’s enjoying every breath of road salt not yet washed down the gutter. But I digress.

Are you, too, feeling “convertible envy” but hesitant to give up your daily driver? You don’t have to. Excuses abound for why not to buy a second car, but when talking about a convertible, all bets are off. For this list, we’re looking at 7 stylish summer convertibles available for less than $10k. Let’s take a look at the countdown:

Lamborghini Veneno

Another year, another Geneva Motor Show. Sure, we Americans get to kick back and watch the unveiling of generational updates to familiar friends such as the Volkswagen GTI, but the Geneva Motor Show really serves two main purposes. The first: to show us what awesome European cars will remain off-limits to American car fans. The second: to provide us with endless laughs at the peculiar names car manufacturers give to their newest rides. What’s in a name? Let’s find out.

Cars We’d Love to See Resurrected

1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

All this chatter surrounding the design of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, the possibility of a new Ford Ranger, and the return of the Dodge Dart has really got us thinking. Wouldn’t it be nice to see some of those modern classics resurrected? Now, this list could surely go on forever if we were to include some of the classics of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, so let’s stick to, say, the ’90s and 2000s. Let’s skip the ’80s, because it’s well known that we all love the Grand National and just about every Datsun ever created. Without further adieu, here’s a list of 10 vehicles we’d love to see resurrected.

Our Favorite Valentine’s Day “V” Cars (In Red, of Course)

In the spirit of Valentine’s day, we’ve decided to compile a list of our favorite car models that start with the letter “V.” Some manufacturers, like Aston Martin and Volvo, have a bunch of models that start with the letter “V,” so we did our best to choose wisely. As an aside, there were a ton of minivans that started with “V,” too. We left those off for obvious reasons. Here are the top pics in alphabetical order:

Spotted Any Cool Cars Lately? Share Them!

Old School Mini

Ah, the last weekend in July. You know, the time of year when a “Sunday driver” gets a little more usage than it does in November. If you’re not lucky enough to be putting your own top down, we hope you’ll still see some cool cars this weekend. Car show, parking lot, shopping trip, your neighbor’s driveway—summer’s the best time to spot beautiful cars. If you do spot something hot, please do us all a favor and share a photo. (Please remember, though, if it isn’t your car, we’re sure the owner would appreciate you hiding its license plates.)

We’ve gotten things started with a sweet old right-hand-drive Mini, spotted close to CarGurus headquarters. We look forward to seeing what catches your eye this weekend!

Can Athletes Pitch Cars and Trucks?

Justin Verlander

Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards, the “Oscars” of professional sports, was marked by the debut of a 2012 Buick Verano commercial featuring Peyton Manning, quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Not so coincidentally, Manning’s pitch came during the same week that arch-nemesis Tom Brady starred in a hip new ad for the 2013 Dodge Dart. It seems as though football players, and quarterbacks in particular, make the best car salesmen. Let’s look around the leagues to see who makes the grade.
