Springing Into Another List of Convertibles

Ragtops in a row

Repetition inspires varied emotions here in New England. Pats fans nearly lost their minds in February, when Tom Brady and company managed to mount an insane comeback to win another Super Bowl. But we were much less happy about the blizzard last Saturday, exactly 20 years after an even bigger April Fools’ Day snowstorm and one brief year after Snowmageddon. Happily, our forecast calls for 60 degrees and sunshine on Tuesday, when we’ll head to the Javits Convention Center in NYC to cover the New York International Auto Show.

We visited the Detroit Auto Show in January, so have already seen some fantastic 2018s, but we can’t wait to meet the new Dodge Demon, Buick Regal, Volvo XC60, Subaru Crosstrek, and Audi RS3, among others. We’ll spare ourselves hours of traffic on I-95 by taking the train to get there and back, but if that weather forecast proves accurate, I know my team and I will be looking forward to top-down driving from the Acela. Cars and Crustaceans: Another Successful NEMPA Ragtop Ramble

ramble_opener

With perfect blue skies overhead and a couple cups of coffee in our stomachs, a CarGurus team made its way to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum yesterday in Brookline, Massachusetts, for this year’s Ragtop Ramble and Crustacean Crawl. The objective: mingle with automaker PR folks and New England auto journalists, check out a bunch of cool cars, capture footage, snap photos, and eat lobster.

This Summer’s 10 Coolest New Convertibles

2017 Porsche 718 Boxster

It’s that time of year again. The sun’s beginning to shine just a little too much, and the weather’s transitioning from pleasant and refreshing to downright oppressive. And while some people will turn to more traditional methods of respite—air conditioning is understandably a very popular option, especially in a car—we believe a convertible may be the best cure for the summer heat. We have said it time and time again: that classic feeling of cruising with the top down will never get old. In fact, it seems to get better with time. If you aren’t currently a convertible owner, there are plenty of options out there with a wide range of styles and price tags.

10 Cars Fit for Super Bowl 50

Super Bowl 50 logo

This weekend will cap the 2015 NFL football season with one of television’s most watched events: the Super Bowl. The 50th edition of this great American sporting event pits Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Manning’s a veteran, having won and taken the MVP title for Super Bowl XLI as well as five Associated Press NFL MVP titles since entering the league in 1998. Cam Newton’s younger, having entered the league in 2011, but he’s got some impressive stats, too, and he’s our bet to win the MVP award this year. Fittingly, each quarterback was the first pick in the NFL draft the year they entered the league.

Because we’re huge fans of cars in addition to football, we’ve decided to turn this year’s Super Bowl into a car contest in addition to a football game. We’ve selected five critical players from each team and picked a car to represent each of those players. We’d be happy to see what you think of our picks as well as which one of each pair of cars you would select – please let us know in a comment. We hope you’ve already voted in our poll on the game itself, of course, and seen the best and worst car ads that will be shown during this year’s game. Since our local Patriots didn’t make it to the big game this year, we’ll likely be much quieter while watching it than we were last year, but we’ll certainly have a good time, and we hope you will, too.

Who Will Drive the Alfa Romeo 4C?

Alfa_Romeo_4C

All I wanted to do was take my family out to dinner and dance lessons.

Last night, though, the universe tried to tempt me with other plans. Every Tuesday night, my wife and two of my daughters head downtown for salsa lessons. We thought we’d make last night special and go to dinner first. It just so happens that the restaurant we chose is next door to a FIAT dealership.

I had no problem walking by the rows of 500s in all their different forms, but then something new caught my eye. Through the dealer’s window I saw my first-ever in-person Alfa Romeo 4C.

First impression? Take my money.

Second impression? Not so much.

The Best New Convertibles You Can Actually Buy

2014 Audi RS5

Fun fact: Barbie’s awesome wardrobe wasn’t what made her cool. Her sweet dream house didn’t make her cool, her friend Ken didn’t make her cool, and her absurd, unattainable, and potentially psychologically debilitating body proportions certainly didn’t make her cool either. What made Barbie cool was her hot pink convertible. A quick Google search indicates that Barbie has owned a wide range of convertibles in her lifetime, all of which were hot pink. Yes, she went through the regrettable VW Beetle phase, and it looks like at one point she was driving around in a Suzuki Cappuccino, but she also had one with a distinctly Aston Martin grill – if pressed, we’d guess it’s a one-off Vanquish, customized by Mattel.

Sports Cars: Dead or Coming Out of Hibernation?

porsche-911-gt3

There are a couple of quotes we need to address today. The first is from Automotive News:

“The sports car market is roughly half of what it used to be,” Ian Robertson, BMW’s head of sales, said in an interview at the manufacturer’s headquarters in Munich. “Post-2008, it just collapsed. I’m not so sure it’ll ever fully recover.”

In Europe and North America, the car’s role as a status symbol has diminished, with SUVs and crossovers becoming ever more popular.

The second quote expands on the first, and comes to us by way of The Truth About Cars:

Increased congestion, urbanization and a demonization of speeding (backed by harsh, if not draconian penalties) has made the notion of a sports car an outmoded one for many people. Even the latest 991 Porsche 911 GT3 has abandoned the manual transmission.

Do we, the sports car fans of the world, have something to worry about?

Did Your City Get an Alfa Romeo Dealer?

alfa_romeo_4C

After years of anticipation, it’s official: We got one!

It won’t be long before the new Alfa Romeo 4C is tearing up the streets of the place I call home.

Chrysler announced this week that it has awarded 82 Alfa Romeo franchises to dealers in 33 states across the United States. One of those is my local FIAT dealer, which will soon add the Alfa Romeo logo to its street sign.

If you’re shopping for a new or used sports car, you might want to wait until you at least have a chance to check out the 4C.

The Alfa Romeo Countdown Is On! For Real This Time!

Alfa Romeo 4C

Come on, you guys. This is it. For real.

Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, now known as Alfa Romeo, will return to the United States by the end of June. This June. As in within 4 months.

It’s okay to be skeptical, as the promise has been made, and broken, plenty of times in the last half-decade or so. This time we have the Alfa Romeo 4C to drool over, but don’t expect to walk in to your local dealer, negotiate a fair price and drive away with a new Alfa.

Why won’t it be that easy to secure a new Alfa all your own?
