Cars Coming Soon: The $845,000 Porsche 918 Spyder

Along with prices for the new Cayman, Panamera and Cayenne, none of which start over $100,000, Porsche has finally released pricing of its new supercar, the 918 Spyder.

As given away in the headline, the 795-hp hybrid hypercar will carry a price in the U.S. of $845,000. But that’s not even the whole story.

In proper Porsche fashion, the options list carries ridiculously priced packages that cost more than an optioned-out Cayman. I mean, really, what’s a Porsche supercar without an $84,000 options package?

Cars Coming Soon: A 30,000-Pound Tow Capacity!

2013 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty

The Toyota Tundra towed a space shuttle. Sort of.

Okay, not really.

In what was a brilliant marketing ploy and an exceptional illusion of capability, the Tundra, and its official 10,000-pound tow capacity, towed a 300,000-pound space shuttle over a Los Angeles bridge. The trick to the feat was a specially engineered tow rig the space shuttle sat on.

If you are fond of your U-joints, transfer case, transmission and the overall integrity of your truck’s frame, you’ll avoid any space-shuttle towing.

But the 2013 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty will be just one zero away from space-shuttle capacity.

Cars Coming Soon: Peek Into the 2013 Detroit Auto Show

2014 Corvette, front

The 2013 North American International Auto Show, informally known as the Detroit Auto Show, opens to the media on January 14.

This is a big one, friends, with hotly anticipated debuts coming from BMW, Chevrolet, Mercedes-Benz, Infiniti, Lexus and more.

Chevy could steal the show, for better or worse, with its new C7 Corvette (rendering above). Whether it stuns or disappoints, you can count on epic media coverage of America’s supercar. Ford, by contrast, will show up with a new van called the Transit. Yawn. Come on, guys, where’s the next iteration of the great GT!?

Keep reading for a quick look at what’s in store from Detroit!

Cars Coming Soon: Ford C-Max Energi

2013 Ford C-MAX Energi

I’ve never been excited about an electric car. Ever.

I don’t even like electric golf carts or those little shuttles that sneak up on unsuspecting travelers in airports. Put a gas engine in those things and watch folks get out of the way!

As I’ve said here many times, my problems with electric vehicles stem from their limited range, outrageous cost and, most of all, the misguided notion that fueling a car with coal-produced electricity is any better than efficiently using gasoline. Not to mention the toxicity of making, and disposing of, the battery packs.

With all that said, the 2013 Ford C-Max Energi could be a car that begins to change the minds of people like me.

Cars Coming Soon: Buick Grand National and Jaguar X-Type Successors

Buick GNX rendering

The new Buick GNX?

Is it possible to mention the Buick Grand National without also mentioning Lord Vader, as made famous by Motor Trend in the mid-1980s? No, no it isn’t. So, I thought I’d get the reference out of the way so we can focus on the importance of some exciting news:

The Grand National, GNX and T-Type will reportedly come back into Buick’s stable after nearly three decades of absence.

If you’re like me, one of your first thoughts upon hearing this news is wondering if GM will simply offer a blacked-out Regal with the GNX nameplate, hope to attract some sentimental fans from the 1980s and call it good. However, this looks like the real deal, complete with a new RWD platform from the hot-selling Cadillac ATS and power that could reach, or even exceed, 400 hp.

Cars Coming Soon: A Silent But Raging Return for Toyota Performance

Toyota Supra

The next Toyota Supra?

You might want to begin thanking everyone who bought a new Scion FR-S.

Because of the success of Toyota’s new little sports car, the company is considering bringing back the vaunted MR2 and Supra names. Yes, these rumors have been floated before, but now that Toyota has confirmed the public’s thirst for its performance offerings, there will probably be more on the way.

This possibility was mentioned in yesterday’s Car of the Year post, but since then a little more info has surfaced. Not all of it good.

Cars Coming Soon: C7 Corvette Gets a 1/13/13 Birthdate

One rendering of the C7 Corvette

I can’t think of a car that’s ever gotten more attention before anyone knows anything about it. To say the next-generation Corvette is hotly anticipated is like saying the upcoming election is mildly competitive.

Speculation regarding the C7 ‘Vette has run rampant for over three years. (One of the first posts about it on our blog was in September 2009, when we were convinced the split rear window would return.)

Only now are we beginning to get clues as to what will power the car, but we’re still mostly in the dark about what it’ll look like or what its exact specs will be.

So far we know two things for sure: The car will debut on January 13 next year, and at least one engine option will be an all-new small-block 6.2-liter V8 known as the LT1.

Cars Coming Soon: Chevy’s Onslaught of 13 New Vehicles for 2013

2014 Chevrolet

Hold on to your bowties, because Chevrolet is about to unleash some insanity.

Well, maybe. Using the words “insanity” and Impala or Malibu in the same sentence might not make much sense, but I think such a descriptor could be used for the new SS or the still-to-be-unveiled C7 Corvette.

While sales for Chevrolet this September are about 5 percent higher than last September, the brand could still use a jolt of excitement. A new Imapala won’t provide enough, but maybe one of the surprises GM recently teased will.

Cars Coming Soon: Porsche Macan Expected to Dominate

2014 Porsche Macan

If the thought of every semi-affluent soccer mom in the nation parking a small Porsche SUV in the garage makes you slightly ill, it’s better you don’t read this.

If you believe a real Porsche shares a platform with no one, this isn’t your post.

If, in your mind, the only true Porsches have a model name starting with a 9, this will upset you.

If you thought the Porsche Cayenne brought the German sports car maker too far into the realm of the mass market, go find some sand and bury your head in it. You’re about to be swarmed by a small CUV known as the Porsche Macan.

Cars Coming Soon: 2013 Ford Fiesta, New Suzuki SX4

2013 Ford Fiesta

If you’re going to drive a small car, drive one with some attitude.

Yeah, something like the Toyota Yaris will get you to Starbucks and back, but no one will turn their head and wonder what you’re driving as you order your triple mocha breve.

For that, you need something with a little more personality. Two small cars on the way could be the answer, as they’ll offer fuel economy and dependability to go with head-turning style.
