Have CUVs Replaced the Family Sedan?

Mar 24, 2016 by tgriffith

For every Mazda6, Volkswagen Passat, Subaru Legacy, and Chrysler 200 sold so far this year, more than two CX-5s, Tiguans, Foresters, and Cherokees have left dealer lots.

The midsize family sedan, once a ubiquitous sight on American highways and in suburban garages, is being replaced by the car-based crossover.

Today’s CUVs offer the same interior seating capacity as sedans, but offer additional cargo space that’s also more accessible. Plus, CUV drivers sit higher and have a better view of surrounding traffic, while available all-wheel drive can handle almost all road conditions.

Have we reached the point where CUVs have replaced sedans?

I’m a Porsche guy now, but I wasn’t always a fan of German-engineered sports cars.

In fact, I started my car-loving life as a devoted supporter of the late-1960s muscle cars, specifically the Ford Mustang.

I spent my early teenage years dreaming of one day owning a Mustang. I wanted a 1965 coupe with the 289 V8 under the hood. I wanted to restore it and love it and keep it forever.

Then I grew up and realized that real motoring perfection came from Stuttgart, not Dearborn. I attributed my muscle car fascination to adolescent hormones and grew into adulthood knowing that nothing drives or handles like a perfectly engineered 911.

That’s why saying this next sentence hurts a little:

Media days are over, but the show must go on: the 2016 Geneva Motor Show, that is. Models introduced there don’t always have a huge impact on the domestic market, as the New York International Auto Show later this month focuses on the U.S. The Geneva show seems more geared to letting car fans around the world drool over barely aspirational cars.

Here are a few that caught our attention from the show.

Honda, once a formidable force in the auto industry and a maker of bulletproof cars to which consumers flocked, has fallen from its mighty throne.

The carmaker used to be known for leading the way in innovation and blowing away the competition when it came to research and development. Today, the company admits it has pursued growth over quality and is now in need of a fundamental transformation.

Quality problems have plagued Honda vehicles in recent years, while competing cars have caught up, or even surpassed, the once invincible automaker. What does Honda need to do to get back on track?

It’s really quite simple.

Mercedes-Benz and Audi Just Outsold BMW

Feb 17, 2016 by tgriffith

BMW has been the benchmark of luxury car sales in the United States for decades. The BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, X3, and X5 have provided the German automaker with ample opportunity to dominate sales charts here.

Worldwide, though, the other two German companies have been slowly inching closer to the sales king by offering what many consider to be better-designed cars that provide superior value. Mercedes-Benz and Audi are top-tier luxury players and last month both managed to outsell their cross-country rival.

Does this mean we have a new champ in the luxury and performance category? Not yet. But BMW ought to quickly come up with a plan to keep itself on top.
